Introduction
Associative remote viewing (ARV) is a specialised version of remote viewing designed for situations where the desired prediction is not a physical location but a future choice, such as whether a stock market will rise or fall, or which team will win a sporting event. Instead of attempting to perceive an abstract outcome directly, ARV converts each possible outcome into a distinctive target image. The viewer’s task is simply to describe whichever image they will eventually be shown after the real-world result is known. The prediction is then made by deciding which target image best matches the viewing session. This approach has become the best-known remote-viewing method for practical forecasting because it avoids asking viewers to perceive concepts like prices or scores directly. At the same time, it introduces new challenges centred on image selection, judging, and interpretation rather than viewing alone.[ResearchGate]researchgate.netResearch Gate Greg Kolodziejzyk's 13-Year associative remote viewingGreg Kolodziejzyk's 13-Year associative remote viewing…September 1, 2012 — This paper presents results from a 13-year expe…
How outcomes are paired with target images
The defining feature of ARV is the use of associations. Before an event occurs, each possible outcome is linked to a different photograph or other sensory target. For example:
- If Team A wins, the feedback image might be a waterfall.
- If Team B wins, the feedback image might be a lighthouse.
The remote viewer never sees either picture beforehand. Instead, they receive a task instructing them to describe the image they will be shown after the event has been resolved. Once the sporting event or market movement is complete, the correct image is revealed as feedback, and judges compare the session transcript with both candidate images.
This design attempts to replace difficult abstract questions—such as “Will the market close higher?”—with a task that proponents argue is more compatible with free-response remote viewing. Images containing distinctive textures, colours, shapes and emotional qualities are considered easier to describe than numerical or symbolic information.[University of Colorado Boulder]colorado.eduUniversity of Colorado Boulder STOCK MARKET PREDICTION USING ASSOCIATIVEUniversity of Colorado BoulderSTOCK MARKET PREDICTION USING ASSOCIATIVE…July 19, 2010 — by CC Smith · Cited by 2 — Using this ARV prot…
Because the prediction depends on the image match rather than on explicit statements about the future event, ARV is often described as a bridge between remote viewing protocols and forced-choice prediction experiments.
Why markets and sports use this format
Financial markets and competitive sports naturally produce binary or limited-choice outcomes, making them attractive test cases for ARV. A prediction may involve:
- whether a stock index rises or falls;
- whether one team defeats another;
- whether a currency strengthens or weakens;
- whether an option finishes above or below a predetermined threshold.
These situations fit neatly into the two-image structure used by many ARV projects.
Supporters have reported applications ranging from experimental stock trading to sports forecasting. One frequently cited long-term project by Greg Kolodziejzyk accumulated thousands of ARV trials over more than a decade while attempting to forecast futures markets. The published analysis reported overall results modestly above chance and claimed profitable trading over selected projects, although these findings remain disputed outside parapsychology and have not been independently accepted as evidence that ARV reliably predicts markets.[ResearchGate]researchgate.netResearch Gate Greg Kolodziejzyk's 13-Year associative remote viewingGreg Kolodziejzyk's 13-Year associative remote viewing…September 1, 2012 — This paper presents results from a 13-year expe…
Other published pilot studies have explored investment forecasting using teams of viewers and judges. These experiments generally emphasise process development as much as prediction accuracy, examining whether changes in judging or protocol influence success rates.[Semantic Scholar]semanticscholar.orgSemantic Scholar[PDF] Associative Remote Viewing for Profit: Evaluating the…8 Mar 2021 — This study examined the importance of the jud…
Why the image match matters more than the viewing
A distinctive feature of ARV is that producing a detailed viewing session is only one stage of the process. Someone must still decide which target image the transcript resembles more closely.
For example, a session describing:
- rushing water;
- cool air;
- smooth stone surfaces;
- mist and movement;
may be judged closer to a waterfall than to a lighthouse. If the waterfall corresponds to a market increase, the prediction becomes “market up”.
The crucial point is that the viewer usually never predicts “up” or “down” directly. Instead, the prediction emerges from the judged correspondence between the session and one of the target photographs.
This means ARV introduces an additional layer of interpretation that ordinary remote-viewing experiments do not necessarily require. Even if the viewing data remain unchanged, different judges may reach different conclusions about which image is the better match.[Koestler Parapsychology Unit]koestler-parapsychology.psy.ed.ac.ukKoestler Parapsychology UnitAssociative remote viewing projects: Assessing rater…by DL KATZ · 2021 · Cited by 10 — This study's overal…
Where the method can break down
Most methodological criticism of ARV focuses not on the viewing session itself but on the chain of decisions that follows it.
Common sources of error include:
- Weak target images. If both photographs contain similar visual elements, distinguishing between them becomes difficult.
- Subjective judging. Different judges may favour different images even when viewing the same transcript.
- Confirmation bias. Knowledge of expected outcomes can unintentionally influence interpretation if blinding is incomplete.
- Target displacement. Some practitioners report sessions appearing to describe the wrong feedback image or another emotionally significant target, although this remains an unverified interpretation rather than an established phenomenon.
- Statistical variation. Short runs of successful predictions may occur by chance, making long-term prospective testing essential.
A 2021 study specifically examined judging reliability across 86 completed ARV trials. Independent judging teams often disagreed substantially, with unanimous agreement occurring in only a small minority of cases. More experienced judges generally achieved higher prediction accuracy than less experienced judges, suggesting that judging itself can materially affect results. The authors concluded that judge selection deserves as much attention as viewer selection in future ARV projects.[Koestler Parapsychology Unit]koestler-parapsychology.psy.ed.ac.ukKoestler Parapsychology UnitAssociative remote viewing projects: Assessing rater…by DL KATZ · 2021 · Cited by 10 — This study's overal…
Similarly, research examining investment-oriented ARV found that replacing one experienced judge with another altered prediction performance significantly, highlighting judging as an important variable rather than a purely mechanical scoring step.[Semantic Scholar]semanticscholar.orgSemantic Scholar[PDF] Associative Remote Viewing for Profit: Evaluating the…8 Mar 2021 — This study examined the importance of the jud…
How supporters try to improve prediction quality
Experienced ARV practitioners often attempt to reduce ambiguity by refining the implementation rather than altering the underlying concept.
Typical practices include:
- selecting highly distinctive target photographs;
- ensuring viewers, judges and project managers remain blinded to outcomes;
- using predefined judging criteria before feedback occurs;
- allowing “pass” decisions when neither image clearly matches;
- recording all predictions prospectively to avoid selective reporting.
These measures are intended to reduce hindsight bias and make successes and failures easier to evaluate objectively. Published ARV researchers have increasingly focused on protocol design, inter-rater agreement and prospective testing rather than isolated successful predictions.[Koestler Parapsychology Unit]koestler-parapsychology.psy.ed.ac.ukKoestler Parapsychology UnitAssociative remote viewing projects: Assessing rater…by DL KATZ · 2021 · Cited by 10 — This study's overal…
What the evidence currently suggests
ARV occupies a distinctive place within future-target remote-viewing research because it converts abstract future events into concrete image-matching tasks. This design has made it the preferred protocol among practitioners attempting predictions in finance, sports and other binary decision settings.
However, the method’s apparent simplicity conceals an important limitation: prediction quality depends not only on whatever information the viewer produces but also on image selection, judging procedures and statistical discipline. Published studies have reported results that supporters interpret as exceeding chance under some protocols, while critics argue that inconsistent replication, subjective judging and methodological complexity prevent those findings from establishing ARV as a reliable predictive technique. As a result, ARV remains an active but controversial area of parapsychological research rather than an accepted forecasting method.[ResearchGate+2Koestler Parapsychology Unit]researchgate.netResearch Gate Greg Kolodziejzyk's 13-Year associative remote viewingGreg Kolodziejzyk's 13-Year associative remote viewing…September 1, 2012 — This paper presents results from a 13-year expe…
